Several special events are held at Cathedral since it is the "SEE" of the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois.
Ordinations
Men are ordained into the deaconate and into the priesthood by the Bishop. Bishop George J. Lucas was the first priest to be ordained a Bishop of Springfield at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

50th Anniversary Mass
This is a Mass celebrated each year by the Bishop, to honor those couples who have been married 50 or more years. The couples renew their wedding vows during Mass. There is a reception in the School Hall following the liturgy.
Mission Mass
A Mission Mass is celebrated each year by the Bishop to thank those schools, and representatives from the school, who have done an extraordinary job at collecting money to help the missions.
Rite of Election
This Rite, which is held the first Saturday and Sunday of Lent, brings those who wish to receive the Sacraments of Initiation ( Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist) at the Easter Vigil, to the Cathedral to convey their desire to the Bishop.
Chrism Mass
This special Mass is held on the Monday of Easter Week. During the Mass the oils that are used during the year are blessed by the Bishop. The priests of the diocese also renew their pledge to serve during this celebration.
